“Lame Duck” Senate Democrats Plan One Last Kick in the Groin for Gun Owners

Back before November 4, when he was fighting to keep his anti-gun Senate majority, you didn’t hear a lot from Harry Reid about his anti-gun intentions after the election.

That was then; this is now.

Now that the elections are over — and the Senate is about to adjourn for the year — Reid is pushing, once again, to confirm anti-gun zealot Vivek Murthy as Surgeon General of the United States.

Remember Murthy?  He was the guy whose only qualification to be the nation’s top doctor was his leadership in a political organization to elect Barack Obama.

And like Obama, Murthy hates the Second Amendment.  When GOA defeated Obama/Bloomberg gun control in April, 2013, Murphy cheered his losing compatriots by observing that:

“We got 20 votes in the senate [sic] in favor of gun violence [sic] legislation that we wouldn’t have had 1 year ago. … Docs fired up to keep fighting for gun safety laws. … NRA … blame[d] everything in the world except guns for the Newtown tragedy.”

Murthy had every right to be disappointed.  His group had actively lobbied for Obama’s gun control agenda — and more:

It’s time for common sense gun rules like background checks and banning assault weapons [sic] and high-capacity magazines, as well as a comprehensive plan to address gun violence including funding for research and data-collection on gun violence and ensuring that health care providers can ask patients about gun ownership in order to counsel them appropriately about safety measures.

Got that?

First, Murthy would use his authority over “health” funds to commission “junk science” studies attacking the Second Amendment.

Second, Murthy would have doctors interrogate their patients on gun ownership — which in some cases is being done as a condition of treatment.  Presumably, this information would then be fed into the federal health database, creating a de facto national gun registry.

We stopped Murthy’s confirmation earlier this Congress.  And guess what?  He hasn’t gotten better with age.

ACTION: Call your Senators (at 202-224-3121) immediately, as things could move quickly.  Ask them to vote against anti-gun zealot Vivek Murthy — both against “cloture” and, if it reaches that point, against his final confirmation.

TALKING POINTS:

1. Vote against the Vivek Murthy nomination — and that includes voting against “cloture” on his nomination.

NOTE: “Cloture” refers to the procedural vote which limits the amount of debate on a bill or nomination.  Cloture will probably require a greater number of votes, thereby raising the bar for Democrats.  In colloquial terms, to vote “against cloture” means voting to continue the filibuster on the nomination.

2. Vivek Murthy is an anti-gun activist, as evidenced by his statements during the fight over post-Newtown legislation.

“We got 20 votes in the senate [sic] in favor of gun violence [sic] legislation that we wouldn’t have had 1 year ago. … Docs fired up to keep fighting for gun safety laws. … NRA … blame[d] everything in the world except guns for the Newtown tragedy.”

3. As Surgeon General, Murthy could use his authority over “health” funds to commission “junk science” studies attacking the Second Amendment.  And, Murthy could have doctors interrogate their patients on gun ownership — which in some cases is being done as a condition of treatment.
