A gun-rights group says California is making its citizens less safe after Gov. Jerry Brown signed new controversial gun-control measures.

The state of California is already infamous among many Second Amendment supporters for its restrictive firearms laws.

The new laws require Californians to turn in their now-banned firearm magazines, mandate background checks for purchasing ammunition, and made it a crime to loan firearms to family members, other restrictions.

Brown signed a “sweeping gun-control package into law,” a headline in The Los Angeles Times declared this week

“I don’t think you have to look too much beyond what happened in Los Angeles during the riots,” comments Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America.

“The people who were able to defend their lives and their property were predominately Koreans who had rifles with large magazines,” Pratt recalls, referring to shop owners who famously protected their property after the 1992 Rodney King verdict.

Fifty people were killed in the multi-day riots but Pratt says those shop owners “had the convincing capability of telling the rioters don’t try it here.”

California has an A-minus rating from the liberal Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which says the state ranks first in gun laws and 42nd in gun-related deaths.

According to Pratt, the new gun laws seem to abandon due process.

“A prosecutor can go and get an order and you don’t have anything to say about it. It just happens,” Pratt says. “And that is a very disturbing development.”
